Shabbat Morning Family Service Series

With Rabbi Pinsker and Leslie Emery

Held on the following Shabbat mornings at 10:30 AM:

August 14

Join us for our interactive Shabbat Morning service for families! Modeled after our popular High Holy Day Family Service format, this special Shabbat experience offers storytelling and music, performances depicting stories from the Torah and Haftarah—a new concept that enhances the experience and significance of Jewish prayer and worship for everyone. Our child-friendly Siddur is appropriate for a mix of all ages. Afterward, we welcome you to join us for the kiddush luncheon to follow. Bring your friends!

(Please bring your own tallit, as we do not have enough for everyone.)

Registration is not required, but for planning purposes if you are able to let us know you are coming, please call us at 975 3481.

Educational Programming for Kids and Teens

  bnaimitzvah   B’nai Mitzvah Education
It may seem a long time away, but if your child will become of age (boys 13, girls 12) within the next four years, it is time to book a date for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

Shaarey Zedek has developed a B'nai Mitzvah program that will ensure your child will be confident and well-prepared to ascend the Bimah on that wonderful day. His/her preparation will begin with a mandatory program for kids only that supports their explorations of what it means to become Bar/Bat Mitzvah and to be a Jew in today’s world. Weekly individual Maftir and Haftarah lessons with our tutors will begin approximately seven to eight months before the simcha. And two to three months before, he/she will begin weekly meetings with Rabbi Green. Together, they will develop the meaningful presentations he/she will give at the Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

Your child’s learning doesn’t have to end when the lights are turned out after the Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration ends. Shaarey Zedek offers continued growth and involvement in our Post-B’nai Mitzvah program and/or Junior Chazzanim group, and with ongoing participation in our Shabbat and daily services.

To book a Bar/Bat Mitzvah date, contact Ian Staniloff, Executive Director, at 452 3711 x482.

Further Instructions

Post-B’nai Mitzvah Education for the Real World With Rabbi Lawrence Pinsker

On hiatus for the summer

There’s a famous poster that says: “This life is a test. It is only a test. If this had been a real life, you would have received further instructions as to where to go and what to do.”

Sometimes life really feels that way. But Judaism teaches that we received “further instructions” on how to live in spite of the existence of a lot of distracting, confusing, and frightening attitudes and events. Whatever Jewish education you may have received, we’re pretty confident that it probably didn’t go into those “further instructions” because somebody thought you weren’t mature enough to understand them. We think you’re ready now. If you had your Bar/Bat Mitzvah in 2006 to 2009, we invite you to join us. There’s no homework, no written essays, no exams—just a great group of young people examining issues that interest them, evaluating whether and how some of the tools Judaism has provided to us can help us understand real-life events and situations.

This group will meet weekly and begin with a light dinner followed by the evening’s activity. There is no fee for this program. For planning purposes we ask that you register by calling 452 3711 x453 a few days before each meeting to let us know your are coming.

  juniorchazzanim

Junior Chazzanim Group

Wednesdays at 4:30 PM

Have you had your Bar or Bat mitzvah and like to sing and lead services? The Junior Chazzanim group is a great way to continue learning and being apart of services. Meeting weekly, the group will practice and prepare for monthly Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat services with keyboard accompaniment that they will lead along with Chazzan Mass. They also participate annually at the synagogue boat cruise (check out the photos on our website) and other special services. Dinner is provided each week. There is no fee to participate and members and non-members are welcome. For more information or to sign up, contact Chazzan Mass at 452 3711 x464 or cantor@shaareyzedek.mb.ca.
