Sanctuary Service
Traditional Choral Service
Led by Rabbi Alan Green, with
Chazzan Aníbal Mass,
world class Maestro Yuri Klaz and the Shaarey Zedek Choir
“Singing to our God is good” (Psalm 147:1)
Meaning: It is good if a person can so bring it about, that God should sing within them.
This year’s Traditional Choral Service for First or Second Day Rosh Hashanah, and for Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur, represents a return to the tried and true formula for High Holy Day services that has become a Shaarey Zedek tradition over the past sixty years. The emphasis here will be on choral settings, familiar tunes, a sermon, teachings from the Rabbi, and Divrei Torah by members of Shaarey Zedek congregation.
Rosh Hashanah Alive! (Contemporary Service)
Led by Rabbi Alan Green, with
Chazzan Aníbal Mass,
and members of the Shaarey Zedek Junior Chazzanim
“He is your Psalm, and He is your God” (Deuteronomy 10:21)
Meaning: He is your Psalm, and He is also your God. The prayer that a person says—that prayer is, itself, God.
Rosh Hashanah Alive! takes its inspiration from other “Alive!” services performed and spectacularly attended across the continent. The music is contemporary, and the singers young, energetic, and accompanied by musical instruments (usually a keyboard, as will be the case this year). Chazzan Mass has trained a group of dedicated young singers who will impart a wonderful new feeling to the High Holy Days at Shaarey Zedek. Anyone who has ever heard the Junior Chazzanim sing at a Friday evening Kabbalat Shabbat Service will tell you the same thing; you will not be disappointed!
