Last year, in this space, I wrote:
“A new light is dawning at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. So, come and meet a different Shaarey Zedek than the one you have known—one that is shedding the calcified pieces of its past. We invite you to rediscover Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur—the services that have moved the hearts and souls of the Jewish people for generations.” Now that last year’s High Holy Days are history, it is legitimate to wonder how successful our experiments in altering the time and space components of our High Holy Day programs really were. Inevitably, some of these experiments succeeded better than others. This year’s High Holy Day program builds on the many lessons we learned from last year.
Also, this past year, the Strategic Planning Cabinet interviewed over two dozen different focus groups, representing a wide range of the varying ages, interests, and points of view that comprise this diverse congregation. These interviews pointed us in a new direction for this year’s High Holy Day services. There will now be two distinct styles of Rosh Hashanah Sanctuary Service: one traditional, with choir; the other, contemporary, with young singers accompanied by piano. Everyone who attends the Sanctuary service will have the opportunity to experience both styles of Rosh Hashanah service. We eagerly anticipate receiving your feedback.
Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur services will be in traditional choral mode, as in previous years. In addition, the downstairs services will feature an improved morning service for families with young children, as well as a reprise of the very successful afternoon Alternative Service for families with “tweens, teens, and beyond” that we had last year. We will also offer in-building childcare for children ages 3 to 8. However, due to severe space limitations, we encourage you to register for childcare at your earliest opportunity.
The High Holy Days are a time for taking stock of one’s growth and spiritual evolution, and on that basis, planning for a whole new existence. We find ourselves in a rapidly changing Jewish world. Exactly how things will unfold in that world is anybody’s guess. Nevertheless, we at Shaarey Zedek are working for, and listening to you. This High Holy Days, let us pledge to build a vital and vibrant Jewish future, together.
