Adult B'nai Mitzvah Program
Fall 2010 to Spring 2011
Goals
- Write a statement regarding the meaning of the event, or a reflection on a prayer within a spiritual context to be read during the service.
- Learn to read Haftarah.
- Chant a part of the liturgy depending on time and comfort zone.
- Learn to read Torah depending on interest and if there is enough time to teach and prepare a reading for the service.
Process
- Beginning the first week in October we will meet as a group to learn to chant Haftarah trope with Leslie Emery and to learn a part of the Haftarah reading being chanted during the Shabbat service. These lessons will be held weekly, for 9 weeks. If desired, when finished learning your part of the Haftarah, we can begin studying Torah trope.
- The first week in December participants will begin studying with Chazzan Aníbal Mass weekly to learn a part of the liturgy depending on comfort zone and availability.
- Throughout this process, the group will be meeting every second week with Rabbi Lawrence Pinsker for the study component of the program. These sessions will also provide an opportunity for the group to discuss a Tzedakah project. There will be 18 meetings in total.
- We are aware that some people who are participating in the program may not be available to attend all of the lessons. If you are going to be away for an extended period of time, lessons can also be held over the telephone or over the computer through Skype.
- Participants are encouraged to keep a journal for the duration of their studies
Prerequisites
- Must be able to read Hebrew.
