Seudah-Shlishit
with Dr. Justin Jaron Lewis
Saturday, September 25 – Celebrating Rebbe Nachman’s 200th Yahrzeit
Also on Saturday, October 30, November 13, December 11 and January 8
Time: Minyan – 6:00 PM, Seudah-Shlishit – 6:30 PM
Saturday evening is the high point of Shabbat spirituality — time to gather over a light meal for deep learning, storytelling, and singing. In fall and spring, the seudah-slishit (Third Festive Meal) lets us savour and extend the last hours of Shabbat, ending with Havdallah. In winter, the melaveh-malkah (Accompanying the Queen), begins with Havdallah and continues the spirit of Shabbat into Saturday night.
This year’s series of end-of-Shabbat gatherings begins on the fourth night of Sukkot, which is the 200th Yahrzeit of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov; we will kindle his yahrzeit light with the Havdallah candle. Through the rest of the year, we will be nourished by Rebbe Nachman’s deep and joyful spirituality, as Jane Enkin and Justin Jaron Lewis share different Breslov teachings, stories and melodies at each of our gatherings.
About Dr. Lewis:
Dr. Juston Jaron Lewis is the Co-ordinator of Judaic Studies at U of M, and teacher of Judaism and World Religions in the Department of Religion.
We hope you can join us! All are welcome! Registration is not required, but for planning purposes please let us know you are coming by calling 452 3711 x457 by Wednesday, September 22. There is no cost to attend. Walk-ins are welcome! |

Sukkot Lunch and Learn with the Clergy
Gimme Shelter! Making a Home for Jews in the World
Tuesday, September 28, Noon to 2 PM
For thousands of years, Jews found meaning in exile and captivity. We prayed daily for freedom to return to Zion and Israel, the centre of Jewish geography and inspiration. Surprisingly, the picture has changed: even Tel Aviv’s Museum of the Jewish Diaspora has completely overhauled its exhibitions, putting Diaspora and Israeli Jews on an equal footing. While our temporary Sukkot harvest booths – symbols of wandering – are standing, join us for “Lunch & Learn” about what it means for Jews to be “at home”.
Lunch Menu: Soup of the Day, Bruschetta Salad, Pesto Glazed Salmon, Rice Pilaf with Vegetables, Pastry from our Pasty Chef, Fruit.
Cost: $13/M, $15/NM
We hope you can join us! All are welcome! To register call 452 3711 x457 by Wednesday, September 22. |

Further Instructions
Post-B’nai Mitzvah Education for the Real
World With Rabbi Lawrence Pinsker
This group will meet weekly, beginning on Wednesday, October 6 at 5:45 PM
There’s a famous poster that says: “This life is a test. It is
only a test. If this had been a real life, you would have received
further instructions as to where to go and what to do.”
Sometimes life really feels that way. But Judaism teaches that we
received “further instructions” on how to live in spite of the
existence of a lot of distracting, confusing, and frightening
attitudes and events. Whatever Jewish education you may have
received, we’re pretty confident that it probably didn’t go into
those “further instructions” because somebody thought you weren’t
mature enough to understand them. We think you’re ready now. If you
had your Bar/Bat Mitzvah in 2007 to 2010, we invite you to join us.
There’s no homework, no written essays, no exams—just a great group
of young people examining issues that interest them, evaluating
whether and how some of the tools Judaism has provided to us can
help us understand real-life events and situations.
This group will meet weekly and begin with a light dinner
followed by the evening’s activity. There is no fee for this
program. For planning purposes we ask that you register by calling
452 3711 x453 a few days before each meeting to let us know your are
coming. |

The Spirituality of Midrash
With Dr. Justin Jaron Lewis
Thursdays, October 7 to November 18, 7:00 PM
Midrash is the tradition of imaginative exploration of Torah. Steeped in holy words, the Sages who worked out the rules of Judaism also created a kaleidoscope of stories and images, shining with holy light. Later gems of Jewish spirituality, like the tales of Rebbe Nachman and the imagery of the Zohar, are built on these early collections of midrash. We will study selected texts of classical midrash, alert for opportunities to let our imaginations touch the divine presence.
About Dr. Lewis:
Dr. Juston Jaron Lewis is the Co-ordinator of Judaic Studies at U of M, and teacher of Judaism and World Religions in the Department of Religion.
Cost: $90/M, $100/NM

Does the Soul Survive?
A Jewish Journey to Belief in the Afterlife, Past Lives and Living with a Purpose
With Rabbi Alan Green
Sundays, November 21, 28, December 5, 12, and 19
10:30 AM
5 sessions based on Rabbi Elie Kaplan Sptiz’s book of the same name. People are invited to purchase the book, although no purchase is necessary to participate. According to Publisher’s Weekly, “Spitz, a Conservative rabbi, sets out to convince readers that it's kosher to be Jewish and believe in reincarnation and the afterlife. He details his personal journey from skepticism to belief in the reality of the soul, distilling along the way the work of pioneering mediums like Brian Weiss and James van Praagh. Spitz discusses one seminar he attended in which he found himself revealing images of a previous life as a Native American, and another in which his wife's deceased grandparents "communicated" with her. Spitz employs an array of Jewish sources--particularly mystical texts--that affirm a faith in the survival of the soul.”
We hope you can join us! All are welcome! Registration is not required, but for planning purposes please let us know you are coming by calling 452 3711 x457. There is no cost to attend. Walk-ins are welcome! |
