The Sisterhood Opening Function/Board
Installation is still a week and a half away, but will be over by
the time you’re reading this. I’m going to go out on a limb, and say
the event was a great success, due in no small part to our guest
speaker, Matthew Leibl. Matthew’s story of his fulfilling his dream
of a summer spent chasing a baseball around North America was both
inspiring and entertaining.
Thank you to all the members of the Sisterhood
Board for the past two years, and for the upcoming term. I also want
to thank Sandy Polanski and Denise Waldman for their touching
installation ceremony. (I haven’t yet figured out how they’re going
to install themselves, since, fortunately for Sisterhood, they’re
both staying on the Board, but I’m sure they’ll have worked that out
beautifully.)
On deck for Sisterhood is the Women’s League
Biennial Convention in Detroit, MI, from November 9-12. Among the
highlights at this year’s convention, whose theme is "Lev Va Nefesh
– Heart & Soul", will be addresses from Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson,
dean of the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, and JTS Chancellor
Arnold Eisen. Both of these men, who are dynamic speakers, will be
talking about the observance of mitzvot and the effect such
observance can have on our lives and therefore on the world around
us.
A Gemilut Hasadim (roughly translated as "acts of
loving kindness") project at this year’s convention is the
collection of hand-made winter scarves and hats for distribution to
those who might need them. If you feel like knitting or crocheting
one or two of these items between now and the end of October, please
leave them for me at the synagogue office, and I’ll see that they
get where they need to go.
Speaking of hats and scarves, our own "Mittsvah
Tree" will be going up after Yom Kippur, and that collection will be
turned over to Jewish Child & Family Services around Chanukah.
We’re already working on the Sisterhood Shabbat
(February 20/21) and the InterFaith Lunch (March 24). If you’d like
to participate in Sisterhood Shabbat, please contact Bonnie
Rosenfeld at brosenfeld@pembinatrails.ca, or by phone at 489-1929.
Finally, at least for now, here is the suggested
schedule of items for our collection for Osborne house for the next
few months.
October – Books (especially children’s books),
CDs, crossword puzzle/word search books, Sudoku puzzle books,
colouring books, children’s and teens’ movies, movie passes
November – soap, shampoo, deodorant, hand lotion,
toothbrushes/toothpaste, make up, nail polish
December – Puzzles, dolls, board games and other
non violent toys for boys and girls, playing cards, diaries,
journals, personal calendars/organizers
Best wishes for a happy, healthy and fulfilling
5769.
B’Shalom.
