The Honorable Pearl
McGonigal, CM, OM, CD, LLD, spoke to our group on October 12, 2007.
She was Lieutenant Govenor for the Province of Manitoba from 1981 to
1986. Ms McGonigal shared some of her notable experiences at the
Governors house with us. She was hostess to many distinguished
guests from around the world: Mother Teresa, Prince Edward and
Madame Sadat, to name a few.
Ms. McGonigal had many
wonderful experiences when she traveled to the far north of our
province. The native people were thrilled with her visit. She
arrived, on one visit, when heavy rain made all the roads and
walkways wet and muddy. Within minutes, twigs were placed to create
a dry walk for her to navigate.
During and since leaving
the Governors house, Ms McGonigal has served on many civic
committees with great success.
She received numerous
awards, which include Hadassah-Wizo Woman of the Year (1994), B’Nai
Brith Canada’s Humanitarian Award (1984), the Order of Canada
(1995), and the Order of Manitoba (1999).
Ms McGonigal was Chair of
the Grace General Hospital Foundation in 1992. At present, she
continues to lend her support and expertise to the Grace Hospital.
Ms McGonigal emanates the spirit of volunteerism. She told us that
she follows the advice given to her by her father when she
approaches each new challenge:
1. learn
2. influence
3. have fun
We certainly experienced
all this criteria when she spoke to us. She is a lovely, warm human
being. We wish her well in all her future endeavours.
