We are mourning the
passing of Lona Shafer, at the time the Shofar is going into
production. Lona was the Executive Director of Shaarey Zedek when
the Adult Leisure Program was born. She and I worked together to
develop the program that still thrives today, almost 30 years later.
Lona always supported my efforts and believed very strongly in the
Synagogue’s participation in the development of a seniors’ program.
Even after she resigned from her position as Executive Director, her
interest continued. Lona supported our efforts with generous
donations through the years. She was a special person, quietly
making her contribution for a better world. We will miss her.

The winter months are
always a problem for transportation to and from our Adult Leisure
Programs. I was especially grateful to Ruth Thompson, who changed
the day of her cleaning lady (the ultimate sacrifice) to help me
out. Sandy Tapper, a former Executive Director of Shaarey Zedek,
also came to my rescue (in between classes). Todah rabah to
them both.
If you would like to
become a volunteer driver for the Adult Leisure Program, please call
the Synagogue office at 452 3711 x453. We sure would appreciate some
other angels to the rescue.
