October was designated as Seniors and Elders Month in Winnipeg. There were events and activities taking place all over the city. Groups, such as ours, were encouraged to invite guests to attend one of our programs during the month.
Adult Leisure decided to invite a group of Japanese seniors to join us for lunch and a musical program. Fifteen delightful guests accepted our invitation. Esther Ginpil used her association with the Suzuki family to make this possible.
Leon Isenberg and Harold Fleishman provided the entertainment — and what entertainment! They had everyone bouncing in their seats and clapping along — and even dancing. Shelley prepared a lovely lunch that featured a Jewish dish (knishes). Rabbi Green welcomed our guests to our Synagogue in a very moving and meaningful way that really touched the hearts of our guests.
We received a very beautiful thank you note, which was signed by each person who attended our program. To our great surprise, a generous donation was included with the thank you note. A contribution had been made by each one of our guests to be used for future Adult Leisure programs.
Mrs. Yoshiko Suzuki, who spoke on behalf of the group, expressed how much they felt at home with us. They felt fully accepted, even though we have very different backgrounds. We are all Canadians living in harmony and respect for one another’s differences. That afternoon we were “as one”, enjoying a good time. |
